Sit & Stand

Wearing compression socks can help you sit and stand all day with energized legs.

Are you stuck sitting in meetings or at your computer for hours on end? Or are you on your feet from morning ‘til night — cooking and managing a kitchen, styling people’s hair, rushing to keep your class of thirty-three students on task and on schedule? Many of us are in professions that keep us sitting or standing for too long. Whether you’re a police officer, a nurse, a flight attendant, a busy mom or a soldier— being in one position for hours is just plain hard on your legs. And by day’s end, you can feel it with sore, aching legs.

All this sitting and standing slows down our circulation, too— which can cause pain, discomfort and blood to pool in our legs, ankles and feet. Dr. ​Howard LeWine, M.D.​, Chief Medical Editor, Harvard Health Publications wrote in 2011 that blood clots pose an immediate and long-term health hazard and that DVTs are at the top of the list of under-the-radar health conditions, putting more than 250,000 Americans in the hospital each year.

The good news is you can do a lot to keep your legs healthy ​and help to prevent a DVT. Move around as much as you can in your daily activities. In addition, stay physically active, avoid dehydration, maintain a healthy body weight and wear compression socks to help usher fluid out of your legs.
