Name: Rachel Bell Kelley Age: 37
Why do you run? There are so many reasons. I run to relax, I run to decompress in the woods, I run because I am actually kind of shy..and running helps me be more extroverted. I run because I want to empower other women, I run to stay mentally fit, to spend time with my dog...and because its just who I am: part of my soul. I am most happy sweaty, and covered in trail dirt. :)
Favorite distance: 50-100k
Bucket List Races/Runs:
Western States 100
San Juan Solstice...I actually try to plan races where I want to travel and visit.
Describe your typical race strategy: Be smart to start, then leave it all out on the course at the end.
What’s on your running playlist? Everything from 80s to techno, to Allman Brothers and the Doors.
What’s your go-to pre-run meal? Banana with almond butter
Favorite post-run treat/meal/drink? A burger and sweet potato fries
What do you do to overcome mental/physical challenges while running? I have been practicing meditation, when the positive voice in my head starts to struggle, I just turn off all thoughts and listen to my breath. (also, it usually means I need to eat or drink)
Road running or Trail running? Both, but mostly trail...and of course MOUNTAINS
What are your non-running hobbies? Painting, reading, photography, gardening
Do you have a running partner/s? Emmitt my whippet/lab mix...my TrailHead friends
Why do you wear compression? It started with an overuse injury in 2011, achilles tendinitis. I found that the socks helped me recover while I was building back up. Now I use them for long runs, and recovery...also because I am on my feet 8 hours a day they make me feel better.
What do you like about Lily Trotters compression socks? How are they different from other compression socks you’ve worn? They are fun and colorful, with just a hint of femininity--this tomboy has a softer side sometimes.
Why do you represent the Lily Trotters brand? So, I have always been a bit more of a “guys girl” I have always had one or two very close girlfriends, but many guy friends -- just the nature of Ultra running and being a tomboy...but I would love to see more women empowered to ultra run and one of the ways I can encourage more women to run is to be a role model for women and girls. I don’t think I realized I was a female role model until the last year I started getting little messages from women thanking me for spreading my enthusiasm for something that isn’t “traditionally a women’s thing.”
What’s your favorite Lily Trotters style/color? My favorite colors are sea greens and blues, purple too, so I love the Denim Stripes socks!
