Race & Relax: 6 Destination Races You Should Plan a Vacation Around

New Year, New Adventure, Planning Your 2018 Bucket List?

If you're going to train for a race, why not reward yourself with a vacation at the same time? A destination race can be great motivation for training. It can also give you a chance to embrace the recovery time you deserve, after completing those hard-earned miles.

Take advantage of your next race and sign up for a destination that gives you a goal and a reward, all wrapped into one.

1. Crazy Horse Marathon

South Dakota’s Black Hills are America’s hidden treasure. The area offers excellent mountain biking, hiking, and rock climbing. Coming a few days before or after your race means time to take in the massive carvings of Crazy Horse Memorial and Mt. Rushmore National Monument. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, book a helicopter tour to get up close and personal to our founding fathers.

2. Honolulu Marathon

Marathon in Hawaii? Yes, please. Every December, tens of thousands of runners descend upon Hawaii’s capital to enjoy a racecation. Throwback some Mai Tai’s, work on your mid-winter tan, and dig those tired toes into the warm sand.

3. Santa Barbara Wine Country Half Marathon

What better way to celebrate a successful race than with wine and friends? The Santa Barbara Wine Country Half Marathon celebrates your victory with a Wine and Music festival event at the finish. With unique options to run as a two-person relay, or a team of six, this race is more about enjoying wine, scenery, and friendship than about running a sub-60 half.

4. Portland Marathon

West Coast, Best Coast? Head to the City of Roses and decide for yourself. Take a day trip to the rocky Oregon Coast, participate in BrewCycle, or spend a day eating your way through countless food trucks. You've earned it!

5. Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas

Rock ‘N’ Roll has a claim to fame: they are the only private event to shut down the Vegas strip, consequently making this race high on many runners' lists. Though you might need to control your inner party animal prior to race day, the city known for it’s all-out buffets will reward the hungry runner.

6. Islamorada Half Marathon

With quintessential beach boutiques, quaint foot bridges, and a beach finish, the Islamorada half encompasses everything we love about island life. Visit Apalachicola National Forest, the largest of it’s kind in Florida, bust out the snorkel gear, or charter a boat to hook a Marlin. There’s no shortage of tropical activities in the Florida Keys.

A destination run will give you plenty of opportunities to rock your Lily Trotters compression socks. From the plane to the race to the celebratory meal at a local restaurant to your post race recovery, Lily Trotters compression socks will keep you comfortable and stylish for your entire vacation race experience.
